Birmingham City Councilor Jay Roberson Thursday announced his resignation. Roberson, elected in 2009, said his wife had accepted a "dream job" with the Alabaster city school system, and that the family would be relocating. He did not specify the nature of the job. The suddenness of the announcement recalled the 2016 resignation of disgraced former state Rep. Oliver Robinson (D-Birmingham). But Roberson denied that his decision is related to any wrongdoing. "When I decided to run for office, I said I'd do it the right way," Roberson told supporters at Lawson State Community College. "I've done things scandal-free, and we are scandal-free." Roberson's resignation takes effect next month. Two other councilors -- Sheila Tyson and Lashunda Scales -- are also leaving the council, following their election to the Jefferson County Commission. The council will appoint successors for all three seats, meaning that one-third of the body will serve without being elected.
