SEC Mulls Stiffer Penalties for Storming the Field

The Southeastern Conference is reportedly considering stiffer penalties for teams whose fans storm the field. The possible sanctions include forfeits, or a loss of home games, according to the report by Sports Illustrated. A conference working group on event safety was appointed by Commissioner Greg Sankey last November after Tennessee fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts following a victory over Alabama. The group was formed a day before LSU fans took the field after upsetting of the Crimson Tide at Death Valley. The working group is led by Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne, along with his counterparts at Georgia and Kentucky. The current punishment for storming the field, escalating fines of $50,000, $100,000, and $250,000, are seen as ineffective at a time when SEC schools are flush with revenue. In addition to the forfeits, the report says the proposal calls for a loss of the next scheduled home game in a rivalry, which would force a team to play road games against a rival for three straight seasons.
