Embattled Birmingham Policeman Resigns

A veteran Birmingham lawman facing a rape charge Tuesday resigned from the force.   Lt. Pete Williston was released from the Jefferson County Jail on $50,000 bond.   His release came a day after Williston, until recently the department's spokesman, was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a teenage relative.    His attorney, Scott Morro, said "there's a lot of healing that needs to go on."    Morro added that "there's remorse."   Morris police said the victim, now 24, said she was sexually assaulted by Williston from 2008-11.
