Student-Led Prayers Are Legal, Group Says

Public schools that have student-led, student-initiated pregame prayers are protected by the U.S. Constitution and case law, the Foundation for Moral Law said Tuesday.   The group, founded by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore, sent letters to school superintendents across Alabama, outlining the case that the prayers are protected by the Free Exercise Clause and the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment and by the Alabama Religious Freedom Amendment.  The letter is a response to an atheist group, the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, which is  demanding that Hewitt-Trussville High School and other schools end the opening prayer at football games.   At last Friday's game, students responded by standing up reciting the Lord's Prayer.
