Lawmaker Blocks Children's Autism Bill

The entire legislative session could get blown up, because a bill mandating insurance coverage for children's autism therapy is being blocked by a single lawmaker.    The chairman of the state senate's General Fund committee, Sen. Trip Pittman (R-Montrose) refused to sign the panel's favorable report of the bill.  That effectively prevents it from moving forward, even though it sailed through the committee by a vote of 14-2.  Pittman says the bill is too expensive, echoing a position held by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Alabama.      Sen. Cam Ward (R-Alabaster), whose daughter has autism, blasted Pittman's actions as "disgraceful."  If Pittman doesn't relent, the bill's supporters are threatening to grind the entire session to a halt.
